**Wing’s Next Big Leap: Expanding Drone Delivery to 150 More Walmart Stores**
Whoa, folks! Big news in the world of drone delivery! Wing, the Alphabet-owned company that’s been changing the game with its on-demand service, is teaming up with Walmart once again. This time, it’s about to bring its speedy delivery to an additional 150 Walmart stores across the US. That’s a whole lot of drone action!
According to Wing’s new Chief Business Officer, Heather Rivera, the rollout will happen this year and into 2027, building on the success of their current pilot programs in Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta. And it’s not just more of the same – Wing is going big, adding 270 Walmart stores to its roster and serving around 10% of the US population. That’s a serious chunk of the population!
So, what are people ordering from Wing? Well, it turns out that the top 25% of customers are using the service at least 3 times a week. And what do they want? Eggs, ground beef, fresh tomatoes, avocados, limes, lunchables, and snacks like Takis. Because, let’s be real, who doesn’t love a good Takis run?
This partnership is a big deal for Wing, which started life as a Google X project. And while they have a deal with DoorDash, their main game is – and still is – through Walmart. In fact, the two companies first teamed up in 2023, launching a pilot program in Dallas-Fort Worth that reached 60,000 homes. Now, they’re taking it to the next level.
Wing is working on evolving its tech and operations, including completing the first commercial flights of its larger plane that can carry a 5-pound payload. But for now, it’s all about co-locating its service at Walmart sites and integrating with their operations. And with a growth strategy that includes clustering store openings – think launching multiple stores at once, like they did in Atlanta last year – Wing is looking to scale its operations big time.
Is the service profitable? Heather didn’t give away the secrets, but she did mention that scaling is key to their business economics. And with this expansion, Wing is about to get a lot bigger, a lot faster.
**What’s Next for Wing and Walmart?**
With this expansion, Wing is firmly planted in the business sector. And with a 10% share of the US population on board, it’s clear that drone delivery is here to stay. What’s next? Will we see more retailers join the partnership? Will Wing expand to new cities? One thing’s for sure – we’ll be keeping an eye on this one.
