**A Glimpse into the Future of Robotaxis: Uber’s New Autonomous Ride**
Hey there, tech enthusiasts! I’m stoked to share with you the latest scoop on Uber’s new robotaxi, which was unveiled at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show. This collaboration with Lucid Motors and Nuro has been in the works for over a year, and I got to take a sneak peek at the production-intent model. Let me tell you, it’s a game-changer.
The robotaxi is built on a Lucid Gravity SUV, which is packed with high-tech goodies like high-resolution cameras, solid-state lidar sensors, and radars. The autonomy package is powered by Nvidia’s Drive AGX Thor computer, and the whole thing is designed to be more efficient and cost-effective than Waymo’s approach.
One of the coolest features is the user interface, which boasts a small screen on the halo to greet riders and a ride interface inside the cabin. The rear passenger screen displays a graphical view of the robotaxi moving through city streets, complete with representations of nearby cars and pedestrians. The companies didn’t have an interactive version of the software ready to test, but it’s been designed to show standard information like estimated drop-off time, remaining ride time, and climate and music controls.
The front passenger screen displays the same information on a larger central touchscreen display. In the demo vehicle I saw, many of the same features appeared on the Gravity’s 34-inch curved OLED display, which sits behind the steering wheel. The Gravity is an incredibly spacious SUV, especially in the two-row configuration, and Uber has chosen to build its forthcoming “premium” robotaxi service around it.
Despite some initial software struggles, Lucid has seemingly bounced back and recently announced that it doubled its 2024 production figures and reached new sales records. However, time will tell if the robotaxi model has any of the same software issues.
After remaining validation is complete later this year, true production versions of the robotaxi will begin rolling off Lucid’s manufacturing lines in Arizona. I’ll be keeping an eye on the timeline for that, and I’ll be sure to share any updates I get.
