AI-Powered Disinformation Swarms Are Coming for Democracy

**The Terrifying Future of AI-Powered Disinformation Swarms**

I was reading a report the other day that really had me worried about the future of democracy. Apparently, AI chatbots could soon be working together to create the illusion of grassroots support for a particular cause or candidate, all while spreading disinformation and propaganda. It sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie, but according to experts, it’s becoming increasingly likely.

The report, written by researchers at BI Norwegian Business School, describes these AI swarms as thousands of chatbots working together to give the appearance of a massive grassroots movement. The problem is that our current methods for detecting and tracing coordinated inauthentic behavior on social media aren’t equipped to handle this kind of AI-powered disinformation.

As Nina Jankowicz, the former Biden administration disinformation czar, put it, “What if AI wasn’t just hallucinating data, but thousands of AI chatbots were working together to give the guise of grassroots support where there was none? That’s the future this paper imagines—Russian troll farms on steroids.”

The researchers predict that these AI swarms will likely be used to disrupt the 2028 presidential election, and that our current methods for detecting inauthentic behavior won’t be enough to stop them. They’re proposing the establishment of an “AI Impact Observatory” to standardize evidence, enhance situational awareness, and allow for a faster collective response. But what’s concerning is that social media executives are not included in this proposed solution, as they have little incentive to identify these swarms.

The scariest part is that there doesn’t seem to be much political will to address the harms caused by AI. As one researcher put it, “The present geopolitical landscape may not be pleasant for ‘Observatories’ basically monitoring online discussions. What’s scariest about this future is that there is little or no political will to address the harms AI creates, meaning AI swarms could quickly become reality.”

It’s up to us to take action and prevent this future from becoming a reality. We need to hold our leaders accountable for addressing the harms caused by AI and develop new methods for detecting and combating these AI swarms.
