Meta is now permitting rival AI firms to supply their chatbots on WhatsApp to Brazilian customers for a price, a day after the corporate confirmed the same resolution for customers in Europe.
Earlier this week, Brazil’s antitrust regulator CADE ruled against Meta and rejected its enchantment to dam an earlier order to droop its coverage change that seeks to bar third-party AI chatbots on WhatsApp.
“Upon reviewing the case, the CADE Tribunal decided that the required necessities for sustaining the safety measure had been current. In response to the case rapporteur, Councilor Carlos Jacques, there may be proof of authorized plausibility, contemplating the relevance of WhatsApp within the Brazilian instantaneous messaging providers market,” CADE’s ruling reads.
The regulator added that banning third-party AI chatbots on WhatsApp “wouldn’t be proportionate” and will lead to aggressive hurt.
Meta mentioned in response that it will let third-party AI chatbot suppliers use its WhatsApp Enterprise API to supply their providers on the app for a price, wherever it’s legally required to take action. The corporate will cost $0.0625 per “non-template message” in Brazil from March 11.
“The place we’re legally required to supply AI chatbots by the WhatsApp enterprise API, we’re introducing pricing for the businesses that select to make use of our platform to supply these providers,” a Meta spokesperson mentioned.
Meta introduced the coverage change final October, which spurred a number of antitrust investigations, notably as a result of the corporate presents its personal AI chatbot, Meta AI, inside WhatsApp. The corporate has maintained that its WhatsApp Enterprise API was not designed to cater to AI chatbots, and that they put a pressure on the corporate’s system.
