**Elon Musk’s SpaceX Town Takes a Step Towards Self-Sufficiency with a New Police Department**
You know how people always talk about self-sufficiency? Like, growing your own food, collecting rainwater, and whatnot? Well, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is trying to take that concept to a whole new level – or should I say, to a whole new galaxy?
As part of its ambitious plans to build a futuristic city on earth, SpaceX’s spaceship hub, Starbase, is getting its very own police department. Yep, you read that right – a police department in the middle of Texas. Only time will tell if this move will be a launchpad to success or a crash landing, but I’ll give it to Elon, the guy’s got vision.
According to reports, a new ordinance was approved in a recent town council meeting, which will establish a police department with a chief of police elected by the council and eight additional cops to start. However, there’s a catch – the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) has yet to receive an application from the city. I mean, who knew starting a police department was more complicated than, say, building a spaceship?
Kent Myers, Starbase’s city administrator, cited the need for police presence to protect SpaceX properties as the main reason for the new department. But this isn’t the first time the city’s tried to take on the responsibilities of a traditional metropolis. Remember that time they formed a volunteer fire department with SpaceX employees? Yeah, that was just a few months ago. And around the same time, the city took over building inspections and permitting. Talk about ambition.
Initially, Starbase relied on the Cameron County sheriff’s office for law enforcement, but that partnership didn’t exactly work out. The two parties signed a $3.5 million five-year contract, but it lacked civil service protections, making it hard to find deputies willing to take the job. In other words, the city decided it was time to take matters into its own hands.
Now, will this new police department be a resounding success or a flop? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure – SpaceX is taking giant leaps towards self-sufficiency, whether we’re talking about building a new police department or reaching Mars.
