**The Shocking Closure of Setapp Mobile: What Happens Next?**

In a sudden and unexpected move, Setapp Mobile, a popular alternative app store from Ukrainian-based developer MacPaw, has announced its shutdown. Launched just about a year ago, Setapp Mobile offered a curated selection of over 50 apps across various categories, all accessible for a mere $9.99 per month – as long as you had an Apple ID linked to an EU member state.

The news was quietly slipped onto Setapp’s support site and later picked up by MacRumors. So, what’s going on? According to the company, it all comes down to “still-evolving and complex business terms that don’t match Setapp’s current business model.” In other words, Apple’s recent changes to its EU regulations, including that infamous Core Technology Fee, have made it impossible for alternative app stores to operate viably.

The Core Technology Fee is a contentious issue, to say the least. Apple introduced it last year to avoid additional penalties for noncompliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA), but instead of simplifying the fees, it made them even more complicated. As a result, developers can’t accurately plan their business or monetize their apps. It’s no wonder MacPaw has decided to shut down Setapp Mobile.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Setapp said it’s found its business model not “viable” due to the changing business conditions. The company still believes in its vision, though, and is looking forward to developing other innovative projects.

What’s the future of alternative app stores in the EU? While Setapp Mobile may be shutting its doors, there are still other options out there. The Epic Games Store, for instance, is a popular alternative app store from the makers of Fortnite, and AltStore is an open-source option. But for now, the news is a blow to those who were enjoying Setapp Mobile’s curated selection of apps.
