Threads edges out X in each day cell customers, new knowledge reveals

Threads is Making Waves: Meta’s App Overtakes X in Daily Mobile Users

The social media landscape is always shifting, and the latest stats are giving us a major surprise. Meta’s Threads has officially surpassed X (formerly known as Twitter) in daily mobile users, and we’re diving into the numbers to understand why.

But first, let’s set the stage. X has been making headlines lately due to some concerning controversy surrounding its AI-powered deepfake features. The platform’s built-in AI, Grok, has been used to create non-consensual nude images of women – including minors. This has sparked investigations from California’s Attorney General, as well as other regions around the world.

So, what about Threads? According to Similarweb, the app has been steadily gaining traction on mobile devices. As of January 7, 2026, Threads had 141.5 million daily active users on iOS and Android, compared to X’s 125 million. This growth is no joke – it’s a significant increase that can’t be ignored.

So, what’s driving Threads’ success? It’s not just the drama surrounding X (although that might have contributed to a small bump in app installs for social networking startup Bluesky). Threads’ focus on creators, the rapid rollout of new features, and cross-promotions from Meta’s bigger social apps like Facebook and Instagram (where Threads is often marketed to existing users) are also likely contributors.

Over the past year, Threads has been updating its features to make it a more appealing platform. It’s added interest-based communities, better filters, direct messaging, long-form text, disappearing posts, and even testing out games. All these changes have contributed to users making Threads a more regular part of their daily routine.

To put these numbers into perspective, Meta reported in August 2025 that Threads had reached over 400 million monthly active users. By October 2025, that number had increased to 150 million daily active users. The growth trend has been continuing for several months now, with Similarweb reporting a 127.8% year-over-year growth as of June 2025.

Interestingly, Similarweb found that X is still ahead of Threads in the US, but the gap is narrowing. A year ago, X had twice as many daily active users in the US as it does now.

On the web side of things, X maintains a steady online audience with around 150 million daily web visits, according to Similarweb data. As of earlier this week, X was seeing 145.4 million daily web visits, while Threads saw 8.5 million daily web visits combined across Threads.com and Threads.net.

So, is this the end of the road for X? Not quite. While Threads is ahead of X in daily mobile users, X still dominates the web. But one thing is clear – Threads is on the rise, and its growth shows no signs of slowing down.
