Meta to reportedly lay off 10% of Actuality Labs employees

**Meta’s Metaverse Dreams Take a Hit: 10% of Reality Labs Division Cut**

Well, it looks like Meta is ditching a chunk of its Reality Labs division – the part of the company that’s been all about making its metaverse dreams a reality. Yep, you read that right. According to a report from the New York Times, around 1,000 jobs are on the chopping block, which is roughly 10% of the division’s 15,000-strong team.

So, what’s next for Meta’s metaverse plans? It seems the company is shifting its focus to AI (because, you know, AI is where the cool kids are at) and realigning its resources to match. The writing’s on the wall – Meta is killing off some of its studios, including Armature Studio, Twisted Pixel, and Sanzaru, along with a technical unit called Oculus Studios Central Expertise. Not a huge surprise, given the company’s recent restructuring efforts.

But here’s the interesting part: Meta’s not abandoning its AR ambitions just yet. In fact, the money saved from these layoffs will be poured into AR, with a focus on developing those AR glasses and controllers we’ve all been waiting for. AR fans, breathe a sigh of relief – it seems Meta’s still on board with your favorite tech.

This move is a part of a bigger picture, folks. Remember when Meta appointed Vishal Shah to oversee AI products back in October? Yeah, that was a hint. And last year, they reorganized Superintelligence Labs after poaching Alexandr Wang from Scale AI. It’s clear that Meta’s all-in on AI, and its metaverse plans? Not as straight-forward as we thought.

I’ve added photos to the article, just for fun. Here’s the source: [Meta to reportedly lay off 10% of Reality Labs staff](https://techcrunch.com/2026/01/14/meta-to-reportedly-lay-off-10-of-reality-labs-staff/).
